Sunday Salon - Taking it easy

The Sunday Salon.com

Both boys and N are not feeling well. I'm exhuasted running around after them. Today is going to be one of those days where nothing gets done except laying about on the sofa with cartoons on. Maybe I'll get to read snatches of my book here and there. Here's hoping anyway.

I just started Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. I love it. I already know that it's going to be one of those books where I must read it at all times and I'm going to be annoyed whenever I have to put it down. I really, really like it when that happens. I might even stay up really late reading it tonight even though I know I'm going to be punished for that decision in the morning. Some books are worth it.

What's the last book you read that you couldn't put down? That you stayed up all night reading even though you know you'll have to get up at the crack of dawn the next morning?

  1. I am currently reading a crime fiction by Iris Johansen, Long After Midnight. It is good. Before this, I did not know she wrote anything other than romance.

  2. The last book that I had that with is the book that I talk about in Sunday Salon this week myself:

    Boston Adventure, by Jean Stafford.

Hope that your family feels better. We're just recovering from a sick week here ourselves-- the flu is hitting the Netherlands hard this year.

  3. The last two Shardlake books were like that for me. I galloped through both of them at the beginning of last week.

  4. I hate to be predictable, but the last book I pulled an all nighter on was Twilight. And then New Moon (the second in the saga)...I stayed up until 5 am. :)

  5. Hi Michelle,
    Hope everyone feels better soon!
The latest book I read that I couldn't put down? Niccolo Ammaniti's The Crossroads. It's just been published in English (the original in Italian) and it's super pacy piece of literary fiction that's incredibly tense throughout. Word of warning - it is rather violent and sexually graphic but if you can put up with that then it's well worth the read.

Also keep an eye out for Ammanitti's older novel I'm Not Scared (it's been adapted to movie now as well) It's follows the story of a boy who discovers something shocking at an abandoned house in the Italian countryside; less violent, almost no sexual content but one incredible story.
    Have fun, good luck!

  7. Oh no! I hope the boys and N are feeling better soon and that you are able to get some rest too.

I am glad to hear you are enjoying Fingersmith. I am looking forward to reading that one. It's such a great feeling to get lost in a book, where time falls away and you just can't put the book down.

It's rare I stay up all night reading anymore, but it's not usually the book's fault. When my body is ready for sleep, nothing will stop it, not even a good book. A sign of getting older.

  8. I hardly ever stay up all night reading anymore. The last time that happened was with Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. I didn't regret being groggy the next morning at all. :]

  9. That would be Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese. It's a sweeping story about twin brothers born in Ethiopia to a surgeon and a nun. Their harrowing birth leaves them without a mother and essentially without their father, who flees the country. I'm going to meet him at the author's event this coming week. :)

  10. "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. One of the best books I've ever read.

  12. I'm curious what you will think when you finish Fingersmith - I really liked it until I hit the half way point, then just found it confusing. Hopefully you will have better luck!
