What payback!

I totally agree with you about Property. I loathed all the characters but it was very well-written. I was disappointed that it turned into kind of a bodice-ripper at the end, though.J.G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02806805528636359436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21582709.post-51584100067034954712010-07-21T07:55:20.008+01:002010-07-21T07:55:20.008+01:00That Ephron excerpt made me laugh! I loved her essay collection too, so I suppose I should hunt this one down. :)Evahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06703372903532502944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21582709.post-11739777303474319622010-07-20T13:47:58.872+01:002010-07-20T13:47:58.872+01:00I suspect that perhaps you picked it up in part be...I suspect that perhaps you picked it up in part because of the title - I know that was a factor in my purchase. :)Zarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03351228605553052771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21582709.post-38039869706261273572010-07-19T19:43:31.760+01:002010-07-19T19:43:31.760+01:00I really need to get off my butt and read somethin...I really need to get off my butt and read something, ANYTHING, Nora Ephron has written. She's one of my fave film writers/directors, so it only seems normal that I'd enjoy her books, too.

I loved I Was Told There'd Be Cake! when I read it for Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon a couple of years ago. Whipped right through it, and I think my fave essay was the one about working in the butterfly exhibit. She's certainly not afraid to make herself look like an ass. Can't wait to read her newest collection.Andihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05220718933942181809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21582709.post-86622898294895238722010-07-17T19:48:26.204+01:002010-07-17T19:48:26.204+01:00I've read all except the Winterson (haven'...I've read all except the Winterson (haven't read any of hers in fact; I feel I should but not sure which one would be the best/least odd...:)) I thought Property was fantastic, though terribly violent/gory/upsetting and as you say, the characters are awful. But a very good way to learn more about the US civil war, and fabulous writing.

I found Juliet, Naked much more hopeful than Hornby's recent work, though there was an air of melancholy and the ending felt rushed. But it is more like the Hornby I used to love, so I enjoyed it.

I liked Sloane Crosley's book, although I didn't always like her. And Heartburn is one of my all-time faves, and Nora Ephron one of my idols.(I do like the film, but I think it lost a lot of the humour.)Dianehttp://blog.dianeshipley.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21582709.post-45279924839342689272010-07-17T12:01:26.756+01:002010-07-17T12:01:26.756+01:00I think I read part of I Was Told There'd Be C...I think I read part of I Was Told There'd Be Cake--I loved the title! I liked Juliet, Naked. I'd never read anything by Hornby but I liked the story and the characters. I Was Told There'd Be Cake was funny and enjoyable.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14004178422343485278noreply@blogger.com
