Library Loot

1. Casino Royale by Ian Fleming
2. The Lives of Animals by JM Coetzee
3. Hello? Is Anybody There? by Jostein Gaarder
4. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
5. Zorro by Isabel Allende
6. Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
7. American Gods by Neil Gaiman
8. The War Poems by Wilfred Owen
9. Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth by Alice Walker

I always have an idea of what I'd like to pick up from the library before I go, I try to make it reasonable. Today, I wanted poetry from WWI, I was *hoping* for Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters, something by Dorothy Koomson (I saw Marshmallows for Breakfast the last time I was in) and some good YA. As you can see, I didn't have much luck. Apart from the poetry. To make it worse, I wanted to stop by a new library this week to see some different books, but it turns out the only one I would be able to drive to was closed until tomorrow at 2pm. I hate things like that. Not that they were closed, that's understandable. I hate it when I have an idea in my head how things will turn out and things end up completely different. Like not finding the right books, to going to my normal library.

I picked Casino Royale because it's on the 1001 list. I thought the Coetzee was as well, but it isn't. I saw it just as I was heading out and didn't stop the check my list, that I nerd-ily keep in my handbag at all times. I picked up the Gaarder book and Tuck Everlasting in order to balance out the adult fiction. I'm excited about American Gods. I adore Alice Walker and Isabel Allende. I'm not sure why I picked up Cold Mountain. It's the movie tie-in version and I normally avoid those editions, but I didn't today.

  1. Regeneration always leads to more reading! I read the trilogy, loved it, read and read and read and ended up writing my dissertation on "Intertextuality in Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy" :)

  2. Doesn't it make you feel wealthy to have a big stack of books on hand? Good reading ahead!

  5. I have so many comments on this loot! lol Bear with me. :)

First of all, I bet reading Casino Royale will be interesting. I *love* the movie (Daniel Craig's the only Bond I've ever seen-I didn't like the second one that much at all), but I know that they changed it a lot from the book to make it twenty-first century.

Then, I love Zorro! It's different from the other Allende I've read-almost no magical realism, lots of swashbuckling. I have it on CD, and I'm actually 'rereading' it right now. :)

And I didn't know Gaarder had another book!! I loved The Solitaire Mystery and really enjoyed Sophie's World. Off to find out more about that title!

And finally, I just finished Tipping the Velvet a week or so ago, and it's really, really good. So I hope you manage to grab it soon. :)

  7. I hate when there is a book that I really want to get from the library and it isn't there. It still looks like you managed to find some good reads though. Hope you enjoy!

  8. Sometimes I like to have a list of books I want when I go to the library. Kind of keeps me in check and prevents me from checking out too many! But, lately I've just gone to roam around the shelves. See what strikes me as a good read at the time.

    Enjoy your loot!

  9. I actually did make it to that other library and picked up four more children's titles. I'm spoilt for choice now!

Iliana - yes, I think there's a time for both. Lately I've been all about my lists because my three year old isn't patient enough for me to wander :)

samantha - it is annoying, but I'm happy with what I picked up!

    Lynda - thanks!

Erika Lynn - Ambitious, yes. I had noticed they were all quite large. I watched the movie of Tuck Everlasting a few years ago and thought it to be quite a cute story. I'm sure the book will be better.

Keris - a whole dissertation the Regeneration Trilogy? Wow, I am really impressed. It was very inspiring for me. I'm in a war kick at the moment. I don't fully understand it.

JG - wealthy, I've never thought of the word in relation to books, but it does seem to fit!

Scrap Girl - yes! I was thrilled to see that on the shelves. I couldn't grab it quick enough :)

    Charley - thank you.

Eva - whew, where to start? :) I actually started reading Casino Royale and didn't get very far into it before putting it down. It was very dry reading. I'm not a Bond fan. I think the Daniel Craig version of Casino Royale is the ONLY Bond film I've managed to sit through. I don't remember loving it either.

As for Zorro, I think it was the combination of Allende and a really adventurous read that led me to pick it up. I'm looking forward to it.

Hello, Is Anybody There is a children's book of his. He's written loads and I think I've read everything he's written. Can't say I understood them all, but I've really enjoyed those reading experiences.

And I still can't find me a copy of Tipping the Velvet! I promised myself I wouldn't buy any books for awhile but not finding this book is killing me so much I might have to break that rule. And she has a new book coming out soon..

  10. Great book stack! Looks like enough to keep you busy and entertained for a while!

Funny, I just got Tipping the Velvet from my library last week. I had to order it from the main branch because I wanted the unabridged audio version for my iPod. I am looking forward to it. It's not a book I had ever heard of until I saw it on some list, and now I see references to it all over the place. It's always that way, isn't it?
