IMM 23 (covering all of February!)

For the entire month of February, I didn't post any IMMs. So, I'm sorry, this is four weeks worth of books recieved as opposed to just one. Thankfully, it was a rather slow month! As always, huge thanks to Kristi of The Story Siren for hosting In My Mailbox every week. Kristi is lovely.

I usually lump all of my books together and thank any individuals who may have sent me books personally and then thank publishers in my review, but I shall try going back to showing my gratitude during these posts as well to see how it goes.

The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney - (signed by author!) Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna's own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma.

When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.

A big thank you to Kirsty of The Overflowing Library for this one. She was able to attend the Random House Blogger's event and sent me this beautiful signed copy! Thank you Kirsty, it really means a lot!

In the Sea There Are Crocodiles by Fabio Geda - One night before putting him to bed, Enaiatollah's mother tells him three things: don't use drugs, don't use weapons, and don't steal. The next day he wakes up to find she isn't there. Ten-year-old Enaiatollah is left alone in Pakistan to fend for himself. In a book that takes a true story and shapes it into a beautiful piece of fiction, Italian novelist Fabio Geda describes Enaiatollah's remarkable five-year journey from Afghanistan to Italy where he finally managed to claim political asylum aged fifteen. His ordeal took him through Iran, Turkey and Greece, working on building sites in order to pay people-traffickers, and enduring the physical misery of dangerous border crossings squeezed into the false bottoms of lorries or trekking across inhospitable mountains. A series of almost implausible strokes of fortune enabled him to get to Turin, find help from an Italian family and meet Fabio Geda, with whom he became friends. The result of their friendship is this unique book in which Enaiatollah's engaging, moving voice is brilliantly captured by Geda's subtly simple storytelling. In Geda's hands, Enaiatollah's journey becomes a universal story of stoicism in the face of fear, and the search for a place where life is liveable.

This book is also from the Random House blogger event. Emma at Asamum Booktopia felt that it would be more along the lines of a book I would enjoy reading, so has forward this proof copy onto me. It does look fascinating, and I thank you.

A Bad Boy Can Be Good For A Girl by Tanya Lee Stone - Josie, Nicolette, and Aviva all get mixed up with a senior boy, a cool, slick, sexy boy who can talk them into doing almost anything he wants. In a blur of high school hormones and personal doubt, each girl struggles with how much to give up and what ultimately to keep for herself. How do girls handle themselves? How much can a boy get away with? And in the end, who comes out on top? A bad boy may always be a bad boy. But this bad boy is about to meet three girls who won't back down.

I've already read and reviewed this book for my Love month. It was recommended to my by Luisa Plaja. Then it was sent to me by Emma at Asamum Booktopia via Lyndsey of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory Book Reviews. A big thank you to each of you lovely ladies.

I really love verse novels, and this one is particularly good!

-------------------------------------------

Sunset Park by Paul Auster - Sunset Park follows the hopes and fears of a cast of unforgettable characters brought together by the mysterious Miles Heller during the dark months of the 2008 economic collapse.

An enigmatic young man employed as a trash-out worker in southern Florida obsessively photographing thousands of abandoned objects left behind by the evicted families.

A group of young people squatting in an apartment in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The Hospital for Broken Things, which specializes in repairing the artifacts of a vanished world.

William Wyler's 1946 classic The Best Years of Our Lives.

A celebrated actress preparing to return to Broadway.

An independent publisher desperately trying to save his business and his marriage.

These are just some of the elements Auster magically weaves together in this immensely moving novel about contemporary America and its ghosts. Sunset Park is a surprising departure that confirms Paul Auster as one of our greatest living writers.

I'm such a big fan of Paul Auster. He really is one of my favourite authors. I did not know that he'd written a new book and so I was thrilled when a friend mentioned it on Twitter. Thank you Hayley for sending this book to me :)

Don't Judge A Girl By Her Cover by Ally Carter
- When Cammie "the Chameleon" Morgan visits her roommate Macey in Boston, she thinks she's in for an exciting end to her summer break. After all, she's there to watch Macey's father accept a nomination for vice president of the United States. But when you go to the world's best school (for spies), "exciting" and "deadly" are never far apart. Cammie and Macey soon find themselves trapped in a kidnapper's dangerous plot, with only their espionage skills to save them.

As her junior year begins, Cammie can't shake the memory of what happened in Boston, and even the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women doesn't feel like the safe haven it once did. Shocking secrets and old flames seem to lurk around every one of the mansion's corners as Cammie and her friends struggle to answer the questions, Who is after Macey? And how can they keep her safe?

Soon Cammie is joining Bex and Liz as Macey's private security team on the campaign trail. The girls must use their spy training at every turn as the stakes are raised, and Cammie gets closer and closer to the shocking truth...

I was this in a giveaway on Sammee's blog. I still have yet to read the first book in the series, and yet to acquire the second book (as this is the third) Still, I'm very grateful that when I do get to the third book in the series, I do not have to wait!

-------------------------------------------

Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead - For Rose Hathaway, everything seems out of kilter. Ever since she made her first Strigoi kills, a dark shadow has been creeping over her. Looming in the background, too, is another realization: If she follows her forbidden love for guardian Dimitri Belikov, she might lose her best friend forever. And these sleep-shaking worries couldn't have come at a worse time. The immortal unloving are prowling everywhere, famished for vengeance against her. An adrenaline-laced episode of the teen pop favorite Vampire Academy.

This, I believe, is the third book in the Vampire Academy series. I have taken all of you at your word when you say that the Vampire Academy is seriously addictive reading and I will want to power through and read it all in one sitting. I have the first two already and am slowly collecting the entire series. I'm debating whether or not to start now that I have the first three or wait until I have the entire lot. Decisions, decisions. This was acquired via a book swapping website.

-------------------------------------------

Forsaken - The Demon Trappers by Jana Oliver - Riley has always wanted to be a Demon Trapper like her father, and she's already following in his footsteps as one of the best. But it's tough being the only girl in an all-guy world, especially when three of those guys start making her life more complicated: Simon, the angelic apprentice who has heaven on his side; Beck, the tough trapper who thinks he's God's gift, and Ori, the strikingly sexy stranger who keeps turning up to save her ass. One thing's for sure - if she doesn't keep her wits about her there'll be hell to pay...

Huge thanks to Hattie at My Kinda Book for offering to send me this book. I've heard great things about it and can't wait to get stuck in. Riley sounds pretty kick-ass!

-------------------------------------------

You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning - Sweet, bookish Neve Slater always plays by the rules. And the number one rule is that good-natured fat girls like her don’t get guys like gorgeous, handsome William, heir to Neve's heart since university. But William’s been in LA for three years, and Neve’s been slimming down and re-inventing herself so that when he returns, he’ll fall head over heels in love with the new, improved her.

So she’s not that interested in other men. Until her sister Celia points out that if Neve wants William to think she's an experienced love-goddess and not the fumbling, awkward girl he left behind, then she’d better get some, well, experience.

What Neve needs is someone to show her the ropes, someone like Celia’s colleague Max. Wicked, shallow, sexy Max. And since he’s such a man-slut, and so not Neve’s type, she certainly won’t fall for him. Because William is the man for her… right?

Somewhere between losing weight and losing her inhibitions, Neve’s lost her heart – but to who?

I have already read and reviewed this book for my Love month! I adore Sarra Manning and when I heard she'd published a new adult book, I knew that I would buy it immediately, read it and love it. And I did. Bought from my local WHSmith.

Jenna and Jonah's Fauxmance by Emily Franklin and Brendan Halpin - Fans of romance don't need to look any further than the fauxmance brewing between teen idols Charlie Tracker and Fielding Withers—known on their hit TV show as Jenna and Jonah, next-door neighbors flush with the excitement of first love. But it's their off-screen relationship that has helped cement their fame, as passionate fans follow their every PDA. They grace the covers of magazines week after week. Their fan club has chapters all over the country. The only problem is their off-screen romance is one big publicity stunt, and Charlie and Fielding can't stand to be in the same room. Still, it's a great gig, so even when the cameras stop rolling, the show must go on, and on, and on. . . . Until the pesky paparazzi blow their cover, and Charlie and Fielding must disappear to weather the media storm. It's not until they're far off the grid of the Hollywood circuit that they realize that there's more to each of them than shiny hair and a winning smile.

I had heard nothing of this book or the authors previously, but when Bloomsbury sent this to me for review I thought it would work nicely for my Love month, for which I've already read and reviewed this one. It was cute and fun! Thank you Bloomsbury!

The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate - A steamy Southern beauty makes one fatal mistake

Natalie Hargrove would kill to be her high school’s Palmetto Princess. But her boyfriend Mike King doesn’t share her dream and risks losing the honor of Palmetto Prince to Natalie’s nemesis, Justin Balmer. So she convinces Mike to help play a prank on Justin. . . one that goes terribly wrong. They tie him to the front of the church after a party—when they arrive the next morning, Justin is dead.

From blackmail to buried desire, dark secrets to darker deeds, Natalie unravels. She never should’ve messed with fate. Fate is the one thing more twisted than Natalie Hargrove.

Cruel Intentions meets Macbeth in this seductive, riveting tale of conscience and consequence.

This one came from the lovely Lynsey who runs the UK Book tours. I really wanted to know if I could love a book with such a bitch for a main character. Alas, I gave it a shot and it wasn't really working for me!

-------------------------------------------

Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel - For thirteen years, Ben Tomlin was an only child. But all that changes when his mother brings home his new “baby brother” Zan - an eight-day-old chimpanzee. Ben’s father, a renowned behavioral scientist, has uprooted the family to pursue his latest research project: a high-profile experiment to determine whether chimpanzees can acquire advanced language skills. Ben's parents tell him to treat Zan like a little brother. Ben reluctantly agrees. At least now he’s not the only one his father’s going to scrutinize.

It isn't long before Ben is Zan's favorite, and Ben starts to see Zan as more than just an experiment. His father disagrees. To him, Zan is only a specimen, no more, no less. And this is going to have consequences. Soon Ben is forced to make a critical choice between what he is told to believe and what he knows to be true -- between obeying his father or protecting his brother from an unimaginable fate.

Half Brother isn’t just a story about a boy and a chimp. It’s about the way families are made, the way humanity is judged, the way easy choices become hard ones, and how you can’t always do right by the people and animals you love. In the hands of master storyteller Kenneth Oppel, it’s a novel you won’t soon forget.

This is another book sent from UK Book Tours. I haven't quite gotten to it yet, but it sounds like a really interesting story and I'm very much looking forward to it.

The Woman He Loved Before by Dorothy Koomson - Libby has a nice life with a gorgeous husband and a big home by the sea. But over time she is becoming more unsure if Jack has ever loved her ? and if he is over the death of Eve, his first wife. When fate intervenes in their relationship, Libby decides to find out all she can about the man she hastily married and the seemingly perfect Eve. Eventually Libby stumbles across some startling truths about Eve, and is soon unearthing more and more devastating family secrets. Frightened by what she finds and the damage it could cause, Libby starts to worry that she too will end up like the first woman Jack loved...Tense and moving, The Woman He Loved Before explores if the love you want is always the love you need ? or deserve.

I adore Dorothy Koomson and am always excited and eager to read anything new that she publishes. This one isn't any different and I'm really hoping to get to this one sooner rather than later (unlike my HB copy of The Ice Cream Girls. *grumble* It's already in paperback!)

-------------------------------------------

By the Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters - Daelyn Rice is broken beyond repair, and after a string of botched suicide attempts, she’s determined to get her death right. She starts visiting a website for “completers”— throughthelight.com.

While she’s on the site, Daelyn blogs about her life, uncovering a history of bullying that goes back to kindergarten. When she’s not on the Web, Daelyn’s at her private school, where she’s known as the freak who doesn’t talk.

Then, a boy named Santana begins to sit with her after school while she’s waiting to for her parents to pick her up. Even though she’s made it clear that she wants to be left alone, Santana won’t give up. And it’s too late for Daelyn to be letting people into her life…isn’t it?

National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters shines a light on how bullying can push young people to the very edge.

This book was kindly gifted to me by my wonderful friend Kirsty, who blogs at The Overflowing Library. In some ways I'd like to keep it for the Death and Bereavement in Teen Lit event this summer, and in others ways I'd like to just read it straight away. We shall see what happens. Either way, thank you Kirsty!

Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson
- Torn between two destinies?

Claire is having the perfect sixteenth birthday. Her pool party is a big success, and gorgeous Matthew keeps chatting and flirting with her as if she's the only girl there. But that night, she discovers something that takes away all sense of normalcy: she's a werewolf.

As Claire is initiated into the pack of female werewolves, she must deal not only with her changing identity, but also with a rogue werewolf who is putting everyone she knows in danger. Claire's new life threatens her blossoming romance with Matthew, whose father is leading the werewolf hunt. Now burdened with a dark secret and pushing the boundaries of forbidden love, Claire is struggling to feel comfortable in either skin. With her lupine loyalty at odds with her human heart, she will make a choice that will change her forever?.

This is another book sent to me from Kirsty, she really is my book fairy! I've been seeing reviews of this one pop up a lot recently and it's piqued my curiousity about the book! I've been collecting quite a few werewolf books lately, perhaps it's time to read them all at once and do a werewolf-themed week, anyone with me? :)

Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting - The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.

Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.

As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.

Hurrah for Desires of the Dead! I cannot wait to return to Violet and Jay's story! I adored The Body Finder and I really hope that I love this one just as much! :)

-------------------------------------------

Choker by Elizabeth Wood - What if the only friend you could trust turned out to be dangerous? A new thriller from debut author Elizabeth Woods!

I really don't that much about this particular book, and it's been getting slightly mixed reviews, but I'm willing to give it a shot and see how I feel about it!

How come I can't find a better product description than this of this book anywhere? I find that slightly strange, but I also didn't try THAT hard.

Anyway, big thank you, again to Hayley for swapping with me! :)

-------------------------------------------

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini - How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Hurrah! I was very excited to see this book listed on the book swapping website I use. I really do recommend it, as there's lots of great books to be had. This particular swap was made with someone I've swapped with before and who has great taste in books. Thanks Jenny! This is the proof copy of a book that isn't published until June! It really sounds fab.

-------------------------------------------

Breathing by Cheryl Renee Herbsman - Savannah would be happy to spend the summer in her coastal Carolina town working at the library and lying in a hammock reading her beloved romance novels. But then she meets Jackson. Once they lock eyes, she’s convinced he’s the one—her true love, her soul mate, a boy different from all the rest. And at first it looks like Savannah is right. Jackson abides by her mama’s strict rules, and stays by her side during a hospitalization for severe asthma, which Savannah becomes convinced is only improving because Jackson is there. But when he’s called away to help his family—and seems uncertain about returning—Savannah has to learn to breathe on her own, both literally and figuratively.

Here's another one that sounds really good. Another swap with Jenny (big thanks!) I just really love the sound of it. I think the cover is quite pretty and I recently started reading a collab YA author blog, YA Outside the Lines in which Cheryl Renee Herbsman contributes and I thought it'd be fun to pick up her book to read. I don't think it's availabe here in the UK though.

Where She Went by Gayle Forman
- It's been three years since the devastating accident ... three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever.

Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Julliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future - and each other.

Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.

You should have heard the squealing that occurred when this book arrived. If I Stay was so beautiful and incredible that I seriously cannot wait to get to this one. You know what I'll be reading next then :) Thank you, thank you to Lisa from Random House for this one!

-------------------------------------------

Heavenly by Jennifer Laurens - I met someone who changed everything. Matthias. My autistic sister's guardian angel. Honest. Inspiring. Funny. Hot. And immortal. That was the problem. What could I do? I did what any other girl would do-I fell in love with him. Zoe's sister darts in front of cars. Her brother's a pothead. Her parents are so overwhelmed; they don't see Zoe lost in her broken life. Zoe escapes the only way she knows how: partying. Matthias, a guardian sent from Heaven, watches over Zoe's autistic sister. After Zoe is convinced he's legit, angel and lost girl come together in a love that changes destiny. But Heaven on Earth can't last forever.

Penitence by Jennifer Laurens - Seeing good and evil spirits is a gift Zoe guards with her life.

Despite her guardian angel's disappearance, Zoe forces herself to accept that she still has a purpose-but how does she carry the weight of her brother's drug abuse, the hardship of living with an autistic sister, and a best friend who's obsessed with a guy who only wants Zoe?

She's never felt more alone.

When a mysterious spirit appears, Zoe thinks she has a new guardian angel. Instead, her brother's addiction worsens, her parents are on the brink of separation, and her best friend tries to kill her. The spirit she thinks is her new guardian isn't there to protect her: he's out to destroy her family and seize Zoe's soul. . . for Hell.

Will Matthias' return mean that he is Zoe's guardian angel again? Or is their love the reason the jaws of Hell now gape open?

Absolution by Jennifer Laurens
- Zoe’s secret is out. And the powers of Hell are ravenous to claim her soul. Her brother, Luke, knows her secret: that she sees both good and evil spirits. Her boyfriend knows. At least Matthias is her guardian angel again. But now Hell’s most ruthless leader will stop at nothing to have her soul.

Albert, Matthias’ father, is relentless in his hunger for Zoe. He wants to destroy Matthias and will use Zoe to do so.

The battle between Heaven and Hell tests everything Zoe has. As she witnesses everyone important in her life suffering, she’s brought to the ultimate choice: will she sacrifice her soul to save the ones she loves?

These three books were loaned to me by the very lovely Emma at Asamum Booktopia. I've seen reviews of them around and am very eager to get to them. Thanks Emma!

-------------------------------------------

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White - Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

I can't stop reading wonderful things about this book. I hear this is the paranormal book to read, even if you're sick of the sight of them. I cannot wait.

-------------------------------------------

Rosebush by Michele Jaffe - See Jane run. See Jane die.

Instead of celebrating Memorial Day weekend on the Jersey shore, Jane is in the hospital surrounded by teddy bears, trying to piece together what happened last night. One minute she was at a party, wearing fairy wings and cuddling with her boyfriend. The next, she was lying near-dead in a rosebush after a hit and run.

Everyone thinks it was an accident, despite the phone threats Jane swears were real. But the truth is a thorny thing. As Jane's boyfriend, friends, and admirers come to visit, more memories surface--not just from the party, but from deeper in her past...including the night her best friend Bonnie died.

With nearly everyone in her life a suspect now, Jane must unravel the mystery before her killer attacks again. Along the way, she is forced to examine the consequences of her life choices in this compulsively readable thriller.

How I wish I reviewed for Atom! They really seem to publish some amazing books, books that I find myself getting more and more excited to read. So, when I saw this in my local bookstore, I really just couldn't resist. Plus the cover is a lot prettier than I'd imagined it would be. Very nice.
