No Books Allowed (3)

Welcome to No Books Allowed. This is a new monthly feature hosted by Raimy from Readaraptor, which is used to discuss things things in life which aren't connected to books. This post can be used to talk about days out, music, TV, video games, films etc for all those book bloggers out there who do occasionally do stuff other than read and go to book events!

I wasn't able to take part in this fab feature last month for reasons I won't go into. And while I did think that perhaps I would squeeze two months into this post, I decided against it.  You'll just have to hear about my adventures in comic conventions another time...

June was definitely a busy month for me.  Lots of days out and having fun.  But a lot of feeling down in the dumps too.  It seems they really go hand-in-hand with me. Let's get started though...

Day trips

We've been on lots of day trips recently!  We went to an exhibition locally that was showcasing the Wildlife Photography of the Year photos. They were amazing. N goes most years to see the exhibit when it's at the Natural History Museum but this year work prevented him from doing so. Luckily it came to a museum in Basingstoke and the whole family went along to see them.  I loved seeing the different photographs in the different categories and it really made me ache to go travelling again. Somewhere really beautiful like Yellowstone National Park or South America. I'd love that.

We've always been trying to meet up more with old friends.  N arranged a lovely picnic in Richmond park a few weeks ago that was really fun and we had some friends around this past weekend for a mildly damp barbecue. I hope we continue to do more fun things with friends.

We've also (of course!) been to Legoland and the boys had an in-set day recently which warranted a trip to a local soft play centre. And then, for a change, N and I decided to take the boys to Thorpe Park. Legoland is really for families and young children and Chessington's market seems to be for slightly older than Legoland's market. And then Thorpe Park seems to be the theme park in the area to go to for teenagers. So naturally, we didn't think there'd be enough rides for us to go on to last us a day. Well, we were wrong! We went on a Saturday and it was surprisingly not busy. We went on loads of rides and it was a lot of fun to go on roller coasters that were a little more thrilling than the ones we're used to at Legoland ... We'll be going again!

It was also Father's Day in June. Because N is quite interested in photography, I'd found this interesting Sculpture Park nearby. It was very different walking around this foresty area with its winding paths and bridges over a little lake and stream and to see this bizarre and pretty statues.  There were huge metal elephants and horses made from driftwood and skeletons in different poses.  The boys and N each had their own cameras and between the three of them they took hundreds of photos!

TV

I've said it quite often on this blog, I don't watch much television.  A lot of it is down to not wanting to commit myself and my time to something ongoing.  Watching television steals hours away from my other hobbies and interests and I would much rather be reading or blogging or spending time with my children than watching something on the telly. The exception to that of course is re-watching some of my favourite television programmes that are already finished and that we have on DVD. And instead of picking on programme and watching it again fully, N and I seemed to have focus mostly on endings and beginnings.  This past month we've watched the last few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the last two episodes of Lost, the final episode of Dawson's Creek and the first two episodes of My So-Called Life.

It's so much fun returning to these shows and these characters. It's comforting. And especially during times when I'm not feeling that great, watching an old favourite makes me happy.

Films

N and I try to make it to the cinema at least once a month. It doesn't always happen but at least the intention is there... this month we went to see the latest The Fast and the Furious film. I love these films probably more than I should do! I admit, the first film was watched mostly because I had a crush on Paul Walker but I carried on because of how much I did enjoy all of the car racing scenes and especially in the 6th film that we saw at the cinema, it really came through how much the relationships between the characters meant to everyone.  I love any kind of story in which people come together as a family and are there for each other no matter what.

And because I've been going through another almighty reading slump lately, I've taken to making myself some popcorn and crawling into bed in the afternoons and popping in a film.  They've all been kind of cheesy, light-hearted films that allow me to escape my own head for a couple of hours. This past week? I've watched Center Stage (cheesy dance film!) and Where the Heart Is, with Natalie Portman, which is a film adaptation. I wish I still had the book.

Job

Oh man, job hunting.  It's difficult, isn't it?  I've been out of paid employment these past 7 years as I've been looking about E and the Littlest and I can honestly say after such a long time out of work, I have very little confidence in my own abilities.  I mentioned this on Twitter recently and was bombarded with lots of support and encouragement from many different people and it really made a difference.  I've been applying like crazy since those nice Twitter conversations and I feel better about myself. It isn't easy to be a mother to small children AND maintain this blog AND study for a university degree. So I just have to remember that the hard work that I've put into into each of these areas of my life over the past seven years isn't something to be taken lightly or dismissed!

What non-bookish related things did you get up to during June?

No Books Allowed (2)

Welcome to No Books Allowed. This is a new monthly feature hosted by Raimy from Readaraptor, which is used to discuss things things in life which aren't connected to books. This post can be used to talk about days out, music, TV, video games, films etc for all those book bloggers out there who do occasionally do stuff other than read and go to book events!

Ah, April. You kind of sucked, didn't you? I'm very glad to see the back of you.  I really hope that next month will be that fresh and new start that I need. Because I've been on a terrible reading and blogging slump that really has just gone on far too long. It's time for that to go.

And while I haven't been reading as much lately or blogging, I still wanted to take part in this feature.  So, here we have all the exciting things I've been up to this past month...

Amsterdam

During April's Easter holidays, my family and I went on a little trip to Amsterdam. Ooh, I was a bit quiet about that, wasn't I?  I didn't mean to be. I had planned an entire Amsterdam-themed week on the blog which I never quite got around to.  Next time I'm there, maybe!

We had a lovely time though. Strolling along the canals, seeing the sights.  The boys enjoyed seeing windmills and I loved this display we saw about how wooden shoes are made. We took a canal boat tour and had a lovely time all around.

My favourite experience will be something you'll hear about soon in its very own blog post, but I also really loved visiting the Maritime Museum. I was amazed at how much effort the museum had put into attracting the interest of small children. We saw some famous paintings and it seemed to inspire E, who is already a keen artist.  My only disappointment about the trip? There were no tulips at Keukenhof.  Major sadface.

Depression

Ooh. I just wrote a really long and very telling paragraph about depression and then I deleted it.  I feel like I'm constantly censoring myself in this regard and even though I feel more open about discussing this topic, it's still not something that I'm very honest about. We'll see how that goes in the future.  I've been struggling this month and since the beginning of the year. I've been trying new things and taking it easy with some of my responsibilities and that has seemed to help.  It's an ongoing process though.

Blogging slump

It always saddens me when things get to the point where I have to drop blogging in favour of other things.  I love my blog and I love the community that has been built around it.  With the help of my lovely new guest reviewer and some planning, I feel like May will be the month in which I return to full-time blogging again.  As much as I love books very much, I'm also a pretty big blogging nerd. I think even if books were taken out of the equation, I would definitely still blog.  Because I like coming up with blog post ideas and writing lists and organising events. It gives me a buzz.  Hurrah for blogging!

Psychology course

One of the things that really kept me busy this month was completing an assignment for my university course.  I always sort of think to myself whenever a new uni course begins that maybe this year will be the year that I actually talk more about what I'm studying on the blog?  Maybe? And it never happens. Mostly because while *I* find Psychology very interesting, I'm not entirely sure how to present the subject to you, my blog readers, in a way that will be interesting.

This year the focus is on cognitive psychology and the assignment that I was working on at the beginning of the month was a scientific report to do with a mixed attention study of visual perception.  Once things kicked off I found myself really immersed in the experiment and the background research that this built upon. But will everyone find it as interesting? Probably not. I felt really panicky about handing in this assignment because I left it to the very last minute. Recently had my marks back and I did pretty well!  My next assignment is due in less than three weeks and I'm hoping to do more sooner rather than last minute again. Wish me luck!

Gardening

And finally, the only other thing that has kept me busy and occupied this past month is some work that we've been doing to make our back garden look nicer.  We have this large strip at the back of the garden that was once filled with horrible over-run bushes and weeds. So one weekend, N and I went out there and spent nearly 20 hours clearing it all out, laying down black sheeting and new top soil and planting a mixture of wildflowers and other pretty things.  The plants are all really small (and that photo is only 1/3 of the space we cleared) but we're hoping that the flowers will fill out a bit more in the next few months.  Plenty of work still to be done!

What have you been doing during the month of April? And do you have any brilliant non-bookish plans for May?

No Books Allowed (1)

Welcome to No Books Allowed. This is a monthly feature hosted by Raimy from Readaraptor, which is used to discuss things things in life which aren't connected to books. This post can be used to talk about days out, music, TV, video games, films etc for all those book bloggers out there who do occasionally do stuff other than read and go to book events!

My blogging friend, Raimy, has started up this excellent new feature and I thought that this month I would join in on the fun.  There are no shortage of non-book related posts here on Fluttering Butterflies, but it is always nice to participate in new features and discuss a group of things that individually I might not have written posts about.

So, March.  March has always been a busy month in our house.

Watching a basketball game

Ever since the Olympics last year, N and I have been keen to take the boys to some more live sporting events.  It's something that I did quite a lot growing up (we'd see local baseball games, college sports, the occasional NBA game) and it's really something I'd like to share with my two little ones. It'd be really fun to get them to be excited about sports.  At the end of February we took them to see their first ice hockey match... It was okay, but what I really wanted was a more festive atmosphere in the audience. Some real team spirit and involvement like what happened when we went to the Olympics last year.  I wanted to do the Mexican wave and to cheer wildly.

Sadly, ice hockey wasn't for us in that respect. But this local basketball game we went to in Guildford? Was so much better.  We'd all stomp our feet and make noise when the opposing team were doing free-throws, and the Guildford mascot was pretty cool. He even posed for this photo with the Littlest.  And there was the Mexican wave and loads of chanting (DE-FENSE! etc) and it really was exactly what I wanted it to be.  I'm really hoping to find more sporting events like this in our area soon :)

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is always difficult for me, especially as my relationship with my own mother is pretty tenuous.  But the boys and N are absolutely lovely and the boys made me homemade cards and a necklace made out of pasta. I got flowers and taken out to both breakfast AND dinner.  Aww.

The Littlest's 5th birthday

How did it happen?! How on earth did my baby turn 5?! Surely he should still be wearing teeny tiny babygros and be small enough for me to carry about in a baby sling. But no.  He's an absolutely mischievious 5 year old.  Who wanted a Scooby Doo party for his birthday.  We couldn't find a Scooby Doo cake last minute, so bought these delicious Scooby Doo cupcakes from a local baker.  I now have a 7 year old and a 5 year old. Hold me.

The party was a great success.  We hired an entertainer to come and let the kids play with his circus-y toys.  It was quite good for the Littlest as he's only started in Reception in January and he doesn't really know the kids in his class very well, especially as he seems to be that little bit shy of other children.  He was a real champ and really joined in with everybody and I really couldn't be more proud of him!

N's birthday (Siro-A)

And because we like to make things interesting around here, 2 days after the little boy's birthday, it's N's birthday.  N is at the age where he forgets entirely what his actual age is and we have conversations that go something like this Me: I can't believe you're going to be 37 this year. N: What? No, I'm 36 this year. ...Right? No? Really, 37?  And I giggle like crazy.

To celebrate N's birthday this year, even though he was unwell, we all trekked into London to meet up with some friends for lunch and followed that with seeing a very unusual production called Siro-A.  It was billed as Japan's answer to the Blue Man Group which is what intrigued N.  It was a really fun and unusual way to spend the afternoon!  I had a brilliant time!

Friday Night Films

N and I decided on starting up Friday night film nights.  We've also taken up a Lovefilm subscription, so that helps.  So far, we've watched The Dark Knight Rises which we missed at the cinema and The Woman in Black, which I fell asleep through.  I've watched Eclipse and Breaking Dawn Part 1 and more cheesy dance films than I'd care to admit to :)

It seems that over the past year, I've slowly phased out watching any television whatsoever.  I've dropped all of the programmes I normally watch and unless it's children's cartoons (mostly Scooby Doo) the TV just isn't on in our house.  And I like that very much. It feels freeing.

Legoland

You'll see me regularly talking about Legoland during future No Books Allowed posts as now that Legoland is open again for the season, our family will be there quite often.  It is my (and the boys' I'm sure) favourite place on earth and we pretty much count down to when it will open again during the months between November and March when it's shut.  It is possibly a bit ridiculous how much of our schedules for the rest of the year will now be revolve around Legoland events and collecting badges and collector bricks!

Sadly, opening weekend was a real wash-out.  Rain, rain everywhere.  Still, even in the rain, Legoland is a pretty awesome place to be.  We picked up some of the new pop badges that we collect, N ruined his birthday surprise and we took some funny pictures with some of the new Lego models in the Big Shop! Fun all around :)

What non-bookish things did you get up to this month?
