Reading roundup *edited*

I haven't been writing too much lately about the books I've been reading. I have become bored of writing reviews and such - partly because of a lack of response, partly because I've become too lazy to continue doing so. Here's what I've finished lately (and yes, all but one of them are on the 1001 books list):

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - which I adored. Seriously, with just the two books of Atwood's I've read, she's catapulted to the top of my favourite authors list. I'm looking forward to some of her other books, but unfortunately, they look just a bit too thick for me at the moment. Currently I have the attention span of a fly. Will write a proper review of this over at the Dystopian Challenge website eventually.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark - I hated every minute of this book, yet something unnamed and unknown kept me from putting this book down forever. I hated the characters, the plot, the writing style, everything.

Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho - For me, it's kind of hit-or-miss with me and Coelho. I really like The Alchemist, yet hated By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept. About halfway through this book I felt the smarm was just a little too much, yet I continued to read it. I'm a masochist.

Oranges are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson - The first half of this book is hilarious, but around the Turning Point I was slightly disappointed. Will more than likely pick up other books of Winterson's.

Beloved by Toni Morrison - How did I go almost 25 years without reading this book?! (I'll tell you how - I thought I had! I saw it at the library and remember thinking 'didn't I love this book when I was in high school? only to read the back cover and think 'either my memory is incredibly crap, OR I've never read this') Loved it. If you haven't read it, find a copy of it somewhere and pick it up.

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote - Almost forgot about this one. This was really quick and easy to read, I love Holly Golightly's character and I kept hearing Moon River in my head... I had this urge to rewatch the film immediately after reading this book.

And, that's where I stand. I've picked up 5 or 6 other books from the library (however I'll keep you in suspense until I've read them!) and have a great weekend...

  2. I haven't read any of the books you read recently, but four of them are on my TBR shelf. I have yet to read anything by Atwood, but I hope to one of these days.

  3. I loved Beloved, but my absolute fave by Morrison is The Bluest Eye. You HAVE to read it if you haven't yet!
