I want to join a book club!

It's one of those things that I always wanted to do - join an actual book club that meets in person, rather than an online book group.  I just love the idea of a bunch of people sitting around all discussing the same book that's been read.  I want to be part of this group of people who take time out of their busy lives and read and then form opinions on the book, the characters, the relationships!

For a long time, I was too shy to even consider joining a book club.  Even if there were one in my area, I don't think that I'd have had the courage to join an already formed group, one who already knew each other and had a history.  Once, years ago, in a fit of madness, I decided to start one myself.  I even went as far as registering a book club name with the library and had my very own library card for it.  But it wasn't to be.  The people that I was advertising with ignored my emails and never printed my notice for a new book club in the area.  I was both disappointed and relieved.

Last year, I was heavily involved in an online book club on the Nerdfighters website.  That was interesting but it didn't feel very satisfying in the way that I think a local book club would be.  My problem now is that I'm hoping to join or start a book club that reads predominantly YA fiction.  And do you know how hard it is to find something like that in my area?!  Despite reports recently that the majority of YA fiction is bought and read by people over 30, nobody in my area will admit to reading teen stories.  I don't know what to do!

I really badly want to find local people who will read YA fiction and discuss these books with me in a very social atmosphere.  I'm just not having any luck.

Are you part of a local book club/group?  I'd love to hear all about it.

  1. I have a similar problem! I'd love to join a teen book club, but I just can't find one. It's disappointing that there doesn't seem to be anyone else my age in this area who loves reading like I do :(

    1. It is a real shame, isn't it?! Good luck to us both finding something suitable.

  2. Same here! I also wish people would just own up to reading YA, it's not that big a deal! I hope you find something!

    1. Thanks Bec! I don't see what the issue with reading YA is either?!

  3. I would love to join a YA book club. I have thought about setting one up online, even though it wouldn't be quite the same, it'd still be great to discuss books in more detail than we can in reviews.

    1. OOH! That'd be awesome. I'd love that. (And after your comment, I checked train tickets to Bath and also how long it would take to drive. Neither seemed like it'd be possible to make that a regular thing :( )

  6. I'd love to find something like this too,I can't even find a non-specific book club I could join, all the ones at local libraries meet during the day which is no good for me and I haven't managed to find any bookshop related ones either.
