Gilmore Girls

Over the last few months, I've been watching the Gilmore Girls from the beginning on E4. I completely missed it when it was on originally and didn't know anything about it before I started watching it except 'oh my god, it's so good, you have to watch it!' And so I did. It was the last show of season 2 on this morning. (Milo Ventimiglia!)

And I shouldn't like it, really. The dialogue is just too snappy, I don't feel as if it's natural. It feels more like they all learned their lines really well and are a bit over-eager to say them. The acting is a little over the top (Paris all the time and Dean and Luke when they're angry) It's a bit predictable and Rory and Lorelai are just too sappy about each other. I don't like gooey relationships between mother and daughter because I don't feel, personally, that it's realistic.

But the characters are all likeable enough, I find all of the cultural references amusing and even though I have so many complaints about the show, I CAN'T STOP WATCHING IT. I'm not sure if it's the actual show that I like or that I'm clinging to it because it's on everyday and I need something to watch.

Did you watch Gilmore Girls when it was on? What did you think?

  1. I didn't find the show until it was well into it's sixth season, but I am a hug fan! I have every season on dvd and rewatch it all every 6 months or so..

  2. i am not a big tv fan, but seem to always have shows i love. When this was on, i probably had a couple of shows i love- so i never allowed myself to watch it... I've been tempted to rent the DVDs though...

  3. I absolutely adored this show. It's still one of my faves. There's loads about it that I should have hated (quirkiness, fast & snappy dialogue,- all those you mentioned) but I just loved it. Towards the end though, I fell out of love with it but that's because of the Palladinos pulling out, I think.

  5. I watched it with my daughter! She now owns all the seasons possible. We are from the northeast though we've been in the Midwest for ages, so it was also a "link" to where we're from.
And while Lorelei and Rory are so freaking glib, in fact, everyone in the show is, they cover a lot of ground thanks to their "delivery." So LTL and I got hooked cuz it was our "mutual" show and therefore so much and so many good things attached to it. There are a surprising amount of fans - they don't talk about it a lot - it just comes up and then people chime in and say they watch it.
    It's a success, then, right?

  6. I was a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan when it was on. My younger sister used to come to my apartment every Tuesday and we'd make spaghetti and watch the show together. I suppose it is kind of cheesy and my boyfriend absolutely hates it because he says Luke has no personality. But I just loved the snappy dialogue and all the BIG WORDS. I loved that they didn't dumb down the show for their audience. They used vocabulary that made you think, "Do I know what that word means?" I love shows that teach me something without me knowing it. Gilmore Girls was like educational programming for teens and adults in that sense.

I suppose it didn't help that I was studying to be a journalist and that was Rory's dream.

Seriously, I could gush for days about how much I like this show. I don't know why, I just do.
