Literary artwork (Embracing My Inner Geek)

A blogging friend of mine, Lucy from Queen of Contemporary, has this cool feature on her blog called 'Embracing My Inner Geek' in which she does just that ... they're quite fun posts and after having read them I start to think of different ways that I've become more open to expressing my own geeky habits and behaviours.  And today I thought I might share with you one geeky thing in particular...

I'm hoping that this is something that a lot of you might share with me.  Not only do I like to surround myself with shelves and stacks of books ... I also like to surround myself with literary artwork on the walls of my home.  I've been collecting some of the artwork below for awhile now and it was only a few weeks ago that I managed to find frames for some of them and N hung them on the walls.  They make me very happy indeed to see them as I'm falling asleep (the John Green print) or walking by them in the hallway (The Hundred Acre Wood poster).

This literary map of the UK was given to me as a Christmas present last year.  It may come as no surprise that I quite like reading books by British authors and it's lovely to have this type of represensatation up on the walls.

I'm not sure how many of my more recent blog followers know that I have a small *cough* collection of Eeyores in my house.  All of the Eeyores in my possession remind me of the early days of my relationship with N and will always hold a special place in my heart.  But even before that, I've always loved the stories and illustrations of Winnie the Pooh.   Last summer, N and I took the boys to Ashdown Forest, where AA Milne took inspiration for The Hundred Acre Wood.  I saw this poster in a gift shop there and knew I had to have it.  It makes me so happy to see this poster on my wall every single day.

Have I ever told you how much of a giant nerdfighter I am?  I used to be in charge of writing weekly blog posts with book recommendations and bookish news for the Nerdfighter website.  I'd choose different books for the Blurbing Book Club and start bookish discussions with nerdfighters worldwide.  It was an awesome position to be in for awhile and then I gave it up when all my other responsibilities (with this blog, my studying, my children etc) became too much.  I've seen all the vlogbrothers videos, I've read all of John's book.  So, this (SIGNED!) John Green print was a birthday present to myself.

This beautiful piece of artwork is by paper engineer Robert Sabuda.  Again, I'm not sure how many of my current blog readers will know about my LOVE of Robert Sabuda and his amazing pop-up books?  I have a massive collections of his books and I am in awe of his talent.  Years ago now, when I came into some spare money, I was able to buy this limited edition artwork of the Wicked Witch from his Wizard of Oz pop-up book. It's numbered and signed by Robert Sabuda and is one of my most prized possessions.  (My love of The Wizard of Oz is a whole 'nother story!)

And finally, we have this lovely thing.  It's a framed Marauder's Map and I saw it when I was in the huge gift shop after doing the Harry Potter Studio Tour last year.  It is the only thing I bought there, even though I was tempted by so many things.  I'm a huge fan and I needed to own this map in a way that only another Harry Potter obsessive could understand!

Lucy usually ends these posts with a reminder to 'wear your geekery like a badge' and I find that I do.  Only for me that badge takes on a slightly different form...

  1. Gah! I love all of these!
A SIGNED John Green print?! That is gorgeous.

I really wanted that Marauders map when I went to the HP studios tour but I balked at the price and only came away with a mug.

Love this post- thanks for sharing!

    1. Oh I know, it WAS expensive. I went on the tour as part of a birthday treat and N said he'd buy me anything I wanted as part of it... I'm very lucky!

  2. Wow, those are gorgeous! I am especially jealous of the signed John Green print :) And I've been looking for that literary UK poster for ages - my old English classroom had a poster with all the words that Shakespeare coined, I want that one too :)

  4. I have that gorgeous literary map, also a Christmas present (2011 in my case). Mine hasn't yet made it onto a wall yet though. With last years birthday money I bought the tea towel version of it, and the new children's literature version, from the fantabulous Literary Gift Company

I've seen one of the maps before but wasn't sure where to get one from.

    1. The Literary Gift Company sells them for like 12 pounds. They're really quite reasonable! And DFTBA.com for the John Green stuff :)

  8. Okay, literary artwork is my favourite thing ever. If your house looks like that, I am for sure coming to live with you forever and ever ;) The Hundred Acre Woods one is perfect, as is the John Green one. I really wanted to buy one but a) they're all so pretty I couldn't choose, and b) no money :( And ahhhh, that Marauder's map! Why don't I have one of those???

I shall check out Lucy's posts!

    1. Ha, I had that same issue when I went to buy something for myself. I did actually buy TWO John Green prints just because I couldn't choose :)

You'd probably be really surprised if you ever saw my house though. There aren't actually many BOOKS on display.

    1. I bought mine in a shop in Ashdown Forest, the place AA Milne took inspiration from for the Hundred Acre Wood... I have no other suggestions as to where to find one, sorry! Good luck.
