First Sunday Salon
This is my first Sunday Salon! N and the boys went out this morning and left me to my books. I've been reading Monica Ali's Brick Lane all morning and I'm loving it so far. Both the book and the alone time!
I can't remember the last time I was able to curl up on the sofa and read without distraction. It feels like such a luxury that I keep getting up and wandering into the kitchen to check on the laundry or tidying up the living room because I'm not used to spending time for just me. Then I stop myself and go back to my book.
I watched the film adaptation of Brick Lane recently and quite enjoyed it, but I was disappointed that I hadn't read the book when I watched it because I didn't feel like I was grasping all the subtleties of the film. I didn't fully understand about the sister or what 'girl from the village' implied. In the book, the sister's letters are slowly me down but I can't wait get back to it.
Has anyone read both Brick Lane and Ali's other book, Alentejo Blue? How do the two compare?

Came by Black Box - lovely blog. Not seen Brick Lane!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blog! I love those butterflies, very unusual.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sunday Salon. I'm afraid I have yet to get around to Brick Lane, but I hear it is very good.
I've wanted to read Brick Lane - didn't know there was a film, so thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sunday Salon :)
Welcome to the Salon! Love your blog. It's so beautiful. :) Sorry that I can't help in the comparison, but I do hope you enjoy your reading today.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to SS! Hope you have great reading Sunday!
ReplyDeleteInteresting blogs, links and books
Welcome to the Salon. I loved 'Brick Lane' although it caused some controversy in the area about which she was writing. 'Alentojo Blue', however, is not so successful. I hope she isn't going to be a one book writer.
ReplyDeleteI love your background, I have always meant to read the book and see the film but never got around to either
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Sunday Salon, Michelle. I'm afraid I haven't anything to offer regarding Brick Lane. I haven't read the book or seen the movie.
ReplyDeleteHaving some quiet time, for yourself is wonderful and I am glad you are able to indulge in a little of that right now.
Have a great week!
I can't begin to tell you how much I'd love to have a few hours to myself. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Salon! Reading on Sundays is such a luxury. Like you, I've read Brick Lane (and really enjoyed it) and am waiting to read Alentejo Blue. It's on my TBR list. I know it received mediocre reviews, but I'll withold judgment until I read it.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Salon! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't... but your morning sounds glorious!
ReplyDeleteBut generally - better to read the book after as the film can't get all the characters/nuance in. My favorite combo: The Van. You can't beat Colm Meaney with a stick.
