Art

There's this really great craft village nearby. N and I stumbled upon it when we were first looking to buy a house in this area. It's my favourite place to be on a weekend afternoon. There's a coffee shop and a bookstore. There's a craft supply shop and a paint-your-own ceramics shop that always reminds me of Eugene and when N and I were first beginning our relationship. There's a toy store for small children (Elliot's age and slightly older) where we've bought many a toy for Baby Boy. But my favourite two shops in this little village are the two stores where they sell handmade arts and crafts. One is more upmarket, selling stained glass mirrors and proper art to hang on the wall, and the other does weird crafts - like helicopters made out of Coca-cola cans or mirrors made out of cut up jeans. I love both places. If we had more money and if I was feeling generous, I'd buy all of my birthday and Christmas presents at this craft village. For us though, we found these two 'paintings' in the upmarket place - it's called encaustic art. I hadn't heard of it before, but this is what wikipedia has to say about it, briefly:

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface — usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.

We met the guy who created our artwork. He seemed nice enough and it was interesting to hear what he had to say about making those specific pieces. It's been fun going out to find pretty things to decorate our new house. I'm finding out more about myself. Here's what I've learned so far: My new favourite colours are red, brown and orange. I like abstract artwork. Not exactly deep stuff, but interesting to find out.

  2. I like the pictures you bought. Have you ever tried doing encaustic art, it's very therapeutic doing abstracts with it, and great fun doing pictures. Maybe that could be your next challenge for the new year! If you'd like to see my encaustic art have a look at artistsprogress.blogspot.com . I`d love you to tell me what you think. Sue
