Reading...

After my last disappointment, reading wise, I haven't been able to settle on a book. It's odd how not having a great book to read unsettles me. I rarely read more than one book at a time, but I keep picking up a book and thinking 'meh' putting it down again, picking up a different book, going back to the first. I'm not sure what to do. Here are the options:

Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
Possession by AS Byatt
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Atonement by Ian McEwan

I guess I'm unwilling to commit to something heavy or too literary. Books I probably SHOULD have already read. But these books have been languishing on my TBR pile forever, and I'm sort of stuck indoors whilst Elliot's potty training improves. Maybe we'll try an outing for this afternoon.

  1. That's a seriously heavy pile of reading! The only one I've read off that list is Nineteen Eighty Four and I hated every minute of it. :) Sometimes what we should read, and what we'd rather be reading are two totally different things. I'm doing a great family epic/espionage thriller right now called Bear Any Burden that's a great read with lots of history and a plot with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing til the end.

  2. I'm right there with you on the old book switcheroo. I can't seem to settle on anything! Good luck! Wish I could make some recommendations, but I haven't read a single one of those books. I started several of them when I was in similar slumps, but I haven't yet finished them.

  3. If that was what I had to choose from, I'd have a hard time selecting as well. I hate when I go to the library to pick up my holds and find out that they're all really serious literary works. It makes it hard to choose one. Good luck making a selection though! Sorry I wasn't much help.

  4. I've read all of those (unlike you, I am unable to put down a book once I start), and you can't go wrong with any of them. But I admit that I don't think I would read 1984 for pleasure.

100 Years of Solitude is beautiful and worthwhile. It was a little slow -- one of those you just have to let flow over you (to quote William Hurt in The Big Chill).

Possession and Atonement were pure entertainment for me. I loved them both.

    Enjoy! And please report back.
