Real-life romantic moments: Airport meeting

Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaking suspicion... love actually is all around.

I love the intro to Love Actually, where Hugh Grant gives this speech about why he loves the Arrivals gate at Heathrow. It's a bit cheesy and slightly naff, but I love it. I wanted to embed the video link, but it wasn't available. If you have the film, you can go pop it in the DVD player after reading this post! I don't mind.

When I was trying to think of a real-life romantic moment, this one was the first to come to mind. It was very spontaneous and emotional. N had flown out to see me the previous December and we had a wonderful time. Then I started having doubts and so he decided to fly out again that March in order for us to work things out. As soon as I saw him come out of the tunnel and into the airport terminal, all my doubts and worries flew away and we both ran at each other. He dropped his bag and ... you can guess the rest, right?

It was a moment. A moment where I'm hoping no one else was grossed out by such a public display of affection or annoyed by the large obstacle standing in the way of other passengers getting off that plane. I can look back now and think about those things, but I sure wasn't just then. I had just the one thing on my mind just then.

  1. My eyes filled up! How I would love an airport moment! that is so beautiful! I'm sure more people were touched than grossed out :) airport montages with people smiling and hugging always make me cry! I'm loving love month a bit too much haha xx

  2. I love this story! And it reminds me of the awful 8 months when Patrick and I were living on different continents, before I moved to be with him. Those airport meetings were SO precious (and the partings were so painful)!

  3. Oh, I'm a sucker for romantic airport moments. Regardless of whether it's mine or someone else's. The world could really do with more moments like these - and for me, everytime i see such a moment, it simply reminds me of some of the good in this world.

  4. I totally identified with that speech by Hugh Grant. I looooove going to pick people up at the airport -- I like peering at other people's bags to see if they are on the same flight as my friend or relation, and then waiting all excited, and then suddenly my friend-or-relation is there and that's always lovely. That is the only bit of airports I ever like. :p

  5. Ha, thanks Luisa :)

Fiona - Oh, I didn't want to make anyone cry! It was a good moment though :)

Ms Mac - Thank you :)

Stephanie - Living that far apart was incredibly hard! And yes, when one of us left it was incredibly painful :(

Tammy - That's a really nice way of looking at it :)

Jenny - It really is the only good part about airports. I think it really makes up for the suckiness of everything else.
