60s Love songs

I don't know if I've mentioned this before (it's likely!) but I never used to listen to what all my friends were listening to. I was born in the 80s so all my friends were at first going mad for Madonna and Michael Jackson and then later New Kids on the Block and that sort of thing. I mostly missed out on all of that.

Because I was still listening to what my parents were listening to. And as my dad grew up in the 60s, it was always the oldies station that was blasting through our house and on our many road trips as a family. We could all sing along to almost every song any radio station would play. Those road trip sing-alongs were some of my favourite memories growing up.

And boy were so many wonderful songs sung about love! Here are some of my favourites.

You Can't Hurry Love by Diana Ross and the Supremes -

I love Diana Ross and the Supremes! Probably most especially because they remind me of my mother. She liked her 80s music, but she really loved The Supremes too. I really could have chosen any of The Supremes' songs, but this song is one of my favourites and it never fails to get me up singing and dancing in the kitchen as I'm making dinner. I always put Diana on when I'm feeling low and she never fails to lift my spirits!

Will You Love Me Tomorrow? by The Shirelles -

This song is a fairly new addition to my list of favourite songs. I'd heard it before, but it was only when it appeared on a CD compilation of 60s music by women that it really stood out for me. I love listening to this song and it probably the song I most listen to of late!

My Guy by Mary Wells -

OK. I'll admit it. Sister Act used to be one of my favourite films ever. Mostly because they used so many of my favourite songs of the 60s! I was teased quite a bit growing up because I didn't listen to whatever cool music was popular at the time, so it was nice to see a film like this payng homage to the 60s.

When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge -

This is still one of my favourite ever songs. I could listen to it forever.

Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters -

And finally I thought we'd end up with something very gentle. I remember when I was little, and had no idea what might be going on under the boardwalk, I really wanted to live somewhere near the sea, in order for there to be an actual boardwalk somewhere! I really wanted that.

Do you have a favourite song about love? From the 60s or otherwise?

  1. So many wonderful songs here! I missed out on a lot of the things my friends liked too growing up, our house was a strange mixture of Motown and Northern Soul from my dad and 1950s Rock n Roll from my mom (and Cliff Richard but the least said about that the better!).

Have you heard the Carole King version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? It's my favourite version of it, but then I love her a lot.

  2. Oh I LOVE THESE SONGS!! I was born in the early 90s, and never really listened to what my friends listened to. I never got into Britney Spears, N*Synch, and the Backstreet Boys. I have always truly enjoyed the 80s, but in high school, when my grandma was visiting, I would listen with her to her music, and I just fell in love with the 50s and 60s style stuff. "You can't hurry Love" one of my all time favorite songs!! The rest of the songs are absolutely great too!

One of my favorites is this 1959 song called "Lipstick on my collar" by Connie Francis.
I just love that sound from back then! :)
